Our Food

Whatever the time of year, we constantly evolve our menus and dishes to reflect the best of seasonal produce. We are proud to source meat and produce locally; including meat from Cannon Hall Farm (and our own secret receipe, handcrafted sausages made at Cannon Hall Farm), plus many of the fruits and herbs have been harvested from right here on the grounds of the Spencer Arms. We have expanded our entire menu, offering more fish dishes, more choice for our vegetarian diners, an ever changing 'specials' board and even a selection of nibbles and grazings to accompany our range of fine wines and hand pulled real ales.

Having worked as a chef for well over eighteen years, I have developed a genuine passion for local produce and cookery. We firmly believe that cooking seasonally is the best way to celebrate the best of British. We always try our utmost to support the local economy and businesses by championing local farms, suppliers and producers, allowing us to work with some of the best ingredients that Yorkshire and Britain has to offer.

Sardines Caesar

When I was training in Cornwall, we prepped, used and sold copious amounts of sardines. I really feel this is an undervalued sustainable fish, which is native to our coastal waters. Combined with the classic flavours of a Caesar salad it’s a great spring into summer classic.

Tandoori Haddock

With Yorkshire being home to some of the nation’s best curry houses this is a salute to them. Marinated in our house spice collection, this vibrant tasty salad combines a variety of flavours, textures and colours to produce one of our best selling dishes.

Red Deer & Lentils

All our venison is supplied locally from “Round Green Farm” in Worsbrough. Served with sweet & sour red cabbage, blackcurrant and goats cheese dumpling, I really think that this dish really showcases the genuine quality that the Barnsley area has to offer.

Rhubarb & White Chocolate Cheesecake

With the famous Rhubarb Triangle just up the road, how can we not promote such an internationally recognised product! The simple flavours of the white chocolate really allow the rhubarb to shine, although we do add a little black pepper for piquancy.
